Full Professor of Agronomy and herbaceous crops at the University of Teramo and Supervisor Lecturer in the PhD College in Crop Science at the University of Padua. Scientific Director of the Edagricole editorial series "University and Training". Member of the following Scientific Societies: SIA, Italian Society of Agronomy (Vice President elected for the four-year period 2016-2019); ESA, European Society for Agronomy; SOI, Italian Horticultural and Fruit and Vegetable Society; Full Academician of the Georgofili Academy and the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine; Ordinary member of the Homeland History Society for Puglia.
Research activities are focused on the sustainable management of natural resources, soil conservation and its fertility, native biodiversity, stability and health of the agroecosystem. The priority objectives of the experimental investigations have given rise to new agronomic management models to promote the economically sustainable transition of cropping systems from intensive to regenerative, in the broader context of the resilience and functional externalities of the agroecosystem. In this context, cross-disciplinary cooperation to design advanced methodological approaches has allowed the development of diagnostic techniques for the study, at different spatial scales and with a high degree of accuracy, of the onset of abiotic stresses (thermal variations, excess and water deficit, nutrient deficiency) with indirect estimation of the metabolic effects in cultivated plants of agricultural interest for food use at the crop system level including: (i) stimulation of the enzymatic activities involved in the metabolism of C and N, the Krebs cycle and glycolysis; (ii) elicitation of hormonal activity, in particular that attributed to auxins and gibberellins; (iii) improvement of the nutritional status of the treated plants through the optimization of the architecture of the root system (length, density and number of lateral roots).
Among the scientific evidence with high impact for the agronomic scientific community, there are digital applications aimed at quantifying production inputs for the accumulation of bioactive compounds, through targeted investigations on the secondary metabolism of plants and the correlations with the physiological mechanisms involved. Co-inventor of the European patent “Method for increasing the content of useful components in edible plants”. Author of over two hundred publications published in international scientific journals and books, 71 publications in International Journals (Scopus: h-index 25; T-citations 2974).
